Career Paths for a Sports Marketing Degree

A career in the sports marketing arena is for anyone who dreams of working in a field that combines a love of the game and savvy business sense. With so much media devoted to sports teams and sporting events, several careers in the sports marketing industry are available.

No matter which career you plan to pursue, an education is the most important step. Take classes in sports management, business, and even marketing with an accredited university or online college. Focus on taking the classes that will better help your sports management career, and major in sports management if possible.

More than anything, sports is big business. It takes a lot of specialized people behind-the-scenes to make it all work. A sports marketing

agent sets up buyers and sellers of sponsorships and assists in financial negotiations. Agents can be employed by either the buyer or seller, or even a third party company. Sometimes these agents will assist account executives, attend a variety of sporting events, and serve as the liaison between different departments in the industry.

Other careers in sports marketing include corporate event marketers, special event planners, market researchers, and special event brokers. A bachelor’s in marketing or business is the next best thing to a sports management degree, and will open to doors to any of these career paths. The only other thing you need is determination and the drive to take advantage of opportunity. Sports marketing jobs are extremely competitive, so networking is key, and doing an internship in the field during college may be the best way to maximize your opportunities.
